Alice Cooper faces backlash over anti-trans comments

Rock legend Alice Cooper has sparked controversy with his recent remarks about transgender people, calling it a “fad” and expressing opposition to gender-affirming surgeries for children.

Cooper, who is known for his theatrical stage shows and hits like “School’s Out” and “Poison”, made the comments in an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, where he also discussed his new album “Road” and his Christian faith.

“A guy can walk into a woman’s bathroom at any time and just say, ‘I just feel like I’m a woman today’ and have the time of his life in there,” Cooper said. “I think it’s getting a little crazy.”

He also said that he was against allowing children to undergo gender reassignment surgery, claiming that they might regret it later in life.

“I don’t think kids should be making that decision,” he said. “I think they should wait until they’re adults and then decide what they want to do.”

Cooper’s comments drew criticism from LGBTQ+ activists and allies, who accused him of being ignorant and insensitive.

“Alice Cooper is a relic of a bygone era who clearly doesn’t understand the reality of transgender lives,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD, a media advocacy organization for LGBTQ+ people. “His comments are not only offensive, but also dangerous, as they contribute to the stigma and discrimination that trans people face every day.”

As a result of his anti-trans stance, Cooper also lost a sponsorship deal with Vampyre Cosmetics, a cruelty-free makeup brand that had partnered with him for his new album.

“We are deeply disappointed by Alice Cooper’s transphobic remarks and have decided to end our collaboration with him effective immediately,” the company said in a statement on Wednesday. “We stand in solidarity with the trans community and support their right to live authentically and safely.”

Cooper has not issued an apology or clarification for his comments as of Thursday. He is currently on tour with fellow shock rocker Rob Zombie as part of the “Freaks on Parade” tour, which will stop at Virginia Beach on Wednesday.
