British Climber Detained After Scaling Seoul Skyscraper With Bare Hands

A British man was detained by authorities after he climbed more than half way up the world’s fifth-tallest skyscraper in Seoul with only his bare hands on Monday, according to reports.

The man, identified only by his surname Wilson, was spotted scaling the 123-story, 555-meter (1,820-foot) -tall Lotte World Tower around 11:30 a.m. local time, causing panic among pedestrians and workers in the building.

More than 90 emergency, police and other personnel were dispatched to the scene, and a helicopter was deployed to monitor his movements. The climber reached the 75th floor before he was intercepted by fire officials who rappelled down from the roof and took him into custody.

Wilson reportedly told police that he had been planning to climb the tower for a long time and that he did not intend to harm anyone or cause any damage. He said he was inspired by French “Spider-Man” Alain Robert, who is famous for scaling skyscrapers around the world.

Police said Wilson will be investigated for trespassing and violating the disaster management law, which prohibits unauthorized entry into high-rise buildings. He could face up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 50 million won ($44,000).

The Lotte World Tower is the tallest building in South Korea and the fifth-tallest in the world. It opened in 2017 and features a luxury hotel, offices, residences, a shopping mall and an observation deck.
