Carlos Alcaraz, the world number one and reigning US Open champion, has advanced to his first Wimbledon quarter-final after a thrilling four-set victory over Nicolas Jarry on Centre Court.
The 20-year-old Spaniard, who is widely regarded as the game’s next great champ, showed his resilience and skill as he overcame the 25th seed from Chile 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 7-5 in a match that lasted almost four hours.
Alcaraz, who also reached the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2022, said he was “really happy” with his performance and praised his opponent for playing “really well”.
“I’m just really happy with the level I played to get through this match,” he said. “I’m really happy to play here, it’s something I dreamed of when I was really young, probably when I started playing tennis.”
“This is something special and the most beautiful court I’ve faced and I would like to be back here.”
Alcaraz will now face a tough challenge in the quarter-finals, where he will meet either 19th seed Alexander Zverev of Germany or 2021 runner-up Matteo Berrettini of Italy, who are playing later on Monday.
Alcaraz has -250 odds to earn a win in this match versus Berrettini, according to Sportsbook Wire.
Meanwhile, third seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia also progressed to the last eight after defeating Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in straight sets.
