The Kansas City Chiefs came back from a 19-point deficit to defeat the Cleveland Browns 33-32 in their last preseason game on Saturday.
The Chiefs, who rested most of their starters, trailed 22-3 in the first quarter after the Browns scored three touchdowns with quarterback Deshaun Watson, who played the entire first quarter. Watson completed 5 of 10 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown to tight end David Njoku.
The Chiefs got on the board with a touchdown pass from backup Shane Buechele to wide receiver Byron Pringle, but Buechele also threw two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns by Browns defenders Juan Thornhill and Caleb Biggers.
The Chiefs cut the lead to 29-23 at halftime with a touchdown run by running back Darwin Thompson and a field goal by kicker Harrison Butker.
In the second half, the Chiefs took their first lead of the game with a touchdown catch by tight end Matt Bushman from quarterback Chris Oladokun. The Browns regained the lead with a field goal by kicker Cade York, who missed an extra point earlier in the game.
Butker made another field goal to put the Chiefs ahead 33-32 with less than two minutes left in the game. The Browns had a chance to win it, but York’s 43-yard field goal attempt was blocked by defensive tackle Phil Hoskins with 57 seconds remaining.
The Chiefs improved to 2-1 in the preseason, while the Browns finished 1-2-1. Both teams will start their regular season on September 12, with the Chiefs hosting the Houston Texans and the Browns visiting the Baltimore Ravens.
