The Washington Commanders ended their preseason with a 17-14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals at FedEx Field on Saturday night.
The Commanders trailed 10-7 at halftime, but took a 14-10 lead in the third quarter when backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Dyami Brown.
The Bengals responded with a 75-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Chris Evans with 9:35 left in the fourth quarter.
The Commanders had a chance to tie or win the game in the final minutes, but Brissett was intercepted by cornerback Darius Phillips at the Bengals’ 25-yard line with 1:07 remaining.
The Commanders finished the preseason with a 2-1 record, while the Bengals went 3-0.
The Commanders will open the regular season at home against the Arizona Cardinals on September 10. The Commanders have named rookie Sam Howell as their starting quarterback, after he impressed in his first two preseason games. Howell did not play against the Bengals, as head coach Ron Rivera decided to rest him and several other starters.
The Bengals will start their season on the road against the Minnesota Vikings on September 10. The Bengals have quarterback Joe Burrow back from a knee injury that cut short his rookie season. Burrow also did not play in the preseason finale, as the Bengals opted to protect him from any potential setbacks.
