Fans of Crater, a Disney Plus original movie that premiered in May 2023, were shocked and disappointed to find out that the sci-fi adventure film had been removed from the streaming service without any prior notice or explanation.
Crater, directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez and starring Isaiah Russell-Bailey, McKenna Grace, Billy Barratt and Thomas Boyce, follows a group of teenage friends who embark on a final adventure before they are separated by a lunar colony relocation program. The movie was praised for its heartfelt story, diverse cast and stunning visuals of a futuristic moon.
However, as of July 6, 2023, Crater is no longer available to watch on Disney Plus. No official statement has been issued by Disney or the filmmakers, leaving fans in the dark about the reason behind the sudden pull. Some speculated that it might have something to do with licensing issues, technical glitches or legal disputes.
Many fans took to social media to express their frustration and confusion over the removal of Crater. Some even started a petition to bring back the movie to Disney Plus, which has garnered over 10,000 signatures so far.
“Crater was such a beautiful and inspiring movie that touched my heart. I don’t understand why Disney would take it away from us without any explanation. It’s not fair to the fans or the creators,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“I was planning to watch Crater with my family tonight, but it’s gone from Disney Plus. What’s going on? This is unacceptable. Disney needs to give us an answer and bring back Crater ASAP,” another fan tweeted.
Crater is not the first Disney Plus original content to be pulled from the service. In April 2023, Disney Plus also removed High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 2 after only two episodes, citing “creative differences” as the reason. However, unlike Crater, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 2 was later released on Hulu, another streaming platform owned by Disney.
It is unclear whether Crater will ever return to Disney Plus or be released on another platform. For now, fans can only hope that Disney will provide some clarity and resolution soon.
