Novak Djokovic is one step closer to his eighth Wimbledon title and a historic calendar Grand Slam after defeating Hubert Hurkacz in four sets on Monday.
The world number one resumed his fourth-round match against the 17th seed after it was suspended on Sunday night due to the 11pm curfew. Djokovic had won the first two sets in tie-breaks, but Hurkacz fought back to take the third set 7-5 with his first break of the match.
Djokovic regained his composure and broke Hurkacz in the seventh game of the fourth set, before serving out the match 6-4. The Serbian star hit 38 winners and 32 aces, while Hurkacz impressed with 44 winners and 36 aces.
Djokovic, who has won all three Grand Slams this year, is aiming to equal Roger Federer’s record of eight men’s singles titles at Wimbledon. He is also chasing his 24th major trophy, which would surpass Rafael Nadal for the most in history.
He will face seventh-seeded Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals, who beat American Chris Eubanks in five sets. Djokovic has a 5-0 head-to-head record against the Russian, who is making his first appearance in the last eight at Wimbledon.
