The video game adaptation Gran Turismo has claimed the number one spot at the weekend box office, beating out Greta Gerwig’s Barbie by a narrow margin. The action-packed film, based on the true story of a team of unlikely underdogs who take on the most elite sport in the world, earned $17.3 million in its debut, according to studio estimates.
Barbie, starring Margot Robbie as the iconic doll, came in second with $16.9 million, a respectable result for the musical comedy that has received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. The final order of the two films won’t be official until results from Sunday’s National Cinema Day — whereby ticket prices are being slashed to $4 across the U.S. — are tabulated.
Meanwhile, the superhero flick Blue Beetle, starring John Boyega as the DC Comics character, continued to perform well in its third weekend, adding $10.2 million to its domestic total of $81.8 million. The film, which cost $104 million to produce, has also grossed $97.4 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $179.2 million.
