Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for several areas in Canada, including Newmarket – Georgina – Northern York Region, along with other areas to the south and east. In addition, a special weather statement is in effect for several other locations including Innisfil – New Tecumseth – Angus.
The weather agency said that heavy rain is expected to start on Friday afternoon and continue into Saturday morning, with total amounts of 50 to 75 mm possible. The rain may be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.
Environment Canada warned that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. It advised residents to avoid driving through flooded roads and to watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
The rainfall warning comes as parts of Canada are experiencing extreme heat and drought conditions, which have contributed to wildfires and poor air quality. Environment Canada said that the rain will help to improve the situation in some areas, but not enough to end the drought.
