Technology has become a vital ally for the health sector in responding to epidemics and preventing their spread. This is the message that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia conveyed at the opening of a National Health Exhibition at the Science Museum on Tuesday.
The exhibition, which will last for one month, showcases various innovations and initiatives that have been implemented in Ethiopia and other countries to enhance the capacity and resilience of the health system. Some of the examples include digital health platforms, mobile clinics, telemedicine, drones, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology.
Prime Minister Abiy said that technology can help to improve access, quality, efficiency, and equity of health services, especially in remote and underserved areas. He also stressed the importance of investing in research and development, as well as fostering collaboration and partnership among different stakeholders.
“It is necessary to create a capacity to respond quickly to an epidemic by supporting the health sector with technology,” he said. “We have seen how technology has enabled us to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic and other health challenges. We need to continue to harness its potential and leverage its benefits for our people.”
The National Health Exhibition is part of the Science Museum’s efforts to promote science education and awareness among the public. The museum, which was inaugurated in 2022, features interactive exhibits and displays on various topics such as astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, and mathematics.
