India captain Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten 86 to put his team in a strong position on the first day of the second and final Test against West Indies at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
India, who won the toss and opted to bat, reached 222 for four at stumps, with Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja (42 not out) adding 99 runs for the fifth wicket.
India had a century opening stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal (55) and Rohit Sharma (47), but lost three quick wickets to slip to 123 for four.
West Indies fought back with some disciplined bowling, led by Shannon Gabriel (2 for 49) and Kemar Roach (1 for 36).
However, Kohli and Jadeja steadied the innings with some positive batting, hitting nine fours and a six between them.
Kohli, who is playing his 500th international match, will resume on day two just 14 runs short of his first hundred in an overseas Test since December 2018.
This is the 100th Test match between India and West Indies, with India leading the head-to-head record with 24 wins, 19 losses and 56 draws.
India are also looking to seal the series after winning the first Test in Dominica by an innings and 141 runs.
