Man City win first Super Cup after penalty shootout against Sevilla

Manchester City claimed their first UEFA Super Cup title after beating Sevilla 5-4 on penalties in a thrilling game in Athens.

The Champions League winners had to come from behind after Sevilla took the lead in the first half through Lucas Ocampos, who headed in a cross from Jesus Navas.

City equalised in the second half when Raheem Sterling converted a penalty after he was fouled by Diego Carlos.

The game went to extra time and then to a penalty shootout, where both teams scored their first four spot-kicks.

Erling Haaland, who had a quiet game, stepped up to score City’s fifth penalty, putting the pressure on Sevilla’s Nemanja Gudelj.

The Serbian defender hit the crossbar with his attempt, handing victory to Pep Guardiola’s side, who added another trophy to their domestic treble last season.

City goalkeeper Ederson was named the man of the match after making several saves during the game and also stopping a penalty from Youssef En-Nesyri in extra time.

Sevilla, who won their record-extending seventh Europa League title last season by beating Roma, missed out on their first Super Cup title after losing their fifth final in this competition.
