Manchester United delivered a convincing performance against Arsenal in a pre-season friendly in New Jersey on Saturday, winning 2-0 with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho.
Fernandes, who was named club captain on Thursday, opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a low left-footed shot from 20 yards that beat Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. Sancho doubled the lead six minutes later, capitalizing on a mistake from Arsenal defender Gabriel and firing a high shot into the net.
United manager Erik ten Hag changed all 10 outfield players at half-time, but his team maintained control of the game and kept a third consecutive clean sheet. Arsenal, who gave starts to summer signings Timber, Rice and Havertz, struggled to create clear chances and were unable to test Tom Heaton, who played the full 90 minutes in goal for United.
The match was attended by a record crowd of 82,262 at the MetLife Stadium, the largest ever for a soccer match in New Jersey. United will continue their pre-season tour in the USA with games against Wrexham, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. Arsenal will face Inter Milan, Everton and Chelsea before the start of the Premier League season.
