Police nab three suspects after dinosaur statue heist in South Dakota

A life-sized statue of a velociraptor was stolen from a museum in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, last week, leading to a police chase and three arrests.

The dinosaur replica, which is made of fiberglass and weighs about 150 pounds, was taken from the Dinosaur Park on Thursday night, according to the Sioux Falls Police Department.

Police said they received a tip from a witness who saw a pickup truck driving away with the statue in the back. They located the vehicle and tried to pull it over, but the driver refused to stop.

A pursuit ensued, during which the statue fell off the truck and was damaged. The truck eventually stopped and the three occupants fled on foot, but were quickly apprehended by officers.

The suspects, two men aged 20 and 21 and a woman aged 19, were arrested on charges of theft, eluding, possession of stolen property and drug possession.

The statue, which is valued at $10,000, was returned to the Dinosaur Park, where it will be repaired and reinstalled.

The park features more than 50 dinosaur statues that were built in the 1930s as part of a federal relief program. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and attracts thousands of visitors every year.
