Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for Rebel Moon, a two-part space epic directed by Zack Snyder, best known for his work on Justice League and Army of the Dead.
The trailer, which debuted at Gamescom on August 22, reveals the titles of both chapters, as well as a release date for the second part. The first installment, coming to the platform on December 22, is titled Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire. The second, Rebel Moon: The Scargiver, premieres on Netflix on April 19, 2024.
The film is set in a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee). Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors – outsiders, insurgents, peasants, and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge.
The film’s all-star cast also includes Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Anthony Hopkins, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Stuart Martin, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huisman, Alfonso Herrera, Ed Skrein, Cleopatra Coleman, Rhian Rees, Jena Malone, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, Sky Yang, and Staz Nair.
Rebel Moon is based on a story that Snyder conceived in his college days and originally pitched as a Star Wars film. The film’s visuals and narrative are clearly influenced by the iconic sci-fi franchise, but also feature elements of fantasy and mythology. Snyder wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, having adapted it from his story written with Johnstad.
The film is produced by Zack and Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller for The Stone Quarry Productions, as well as Eric Newman for Grand Electric. Bergen Swanson executive produced alongside Hatten, Johnstad, and Sarah Bowen for Grand Electric.
The film will be released in two versions: one for all audiences and one more adult-oriented. Snyder said in an interview with Vanity Fair that he wanted to offer fans a deeper and harder dive into his vision.
The teaser trailer showcases the film’s stunning cinematography, epic action sequences, and diverse characters. It also features the voice of Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins as Jimmy, an ancient robot who narrates the story.
