Ryan Preece, the driver of the No. 41 Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing, was taken to a local hospital for observation after a terrifying crash at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday night.
Preece’s car went airborne after being hit by Erik Jones on the backstretch and then sliding into the grass. He flipped 10 times before landing on his wheels. He was able to get out of the car and walk to a stretcher.
“If you want to be a race car driver, you better be tough,” Preece wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Dammit. Fast @racechoice @FordPerformance Mustang. I’m coming back.”
Stewart-Haas Racing released a statement saying that Preece was “awake, alert and mobile” and had been communicating with family and friends. He will undergo another evaluation by medical personnel on Sunday morning.
NASCAR is taking the No. 41 Ford to the R&D Center for a safety evaluation. The crash occurred on lap 156 of the Coke Zero Sugar 400, which was won by Ryan Blaney.
