Scott Pilgrim, the beloved comic book character who fought for his love in a live-action movie, is back in a new animated series on Netflix. The series, titled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, will premiere on Nov. 17, 2023, and will feature the original cast members reprising their roles as voice actors.
The series is co-created by Bryan Lee O’Malley, the writer and artist behind the Scott Pilgrim comics, and BenDavid Grabinski, the creator of Are You Afraid of the Dark?. Edgar Wright, the director and co-writer of the 2010 movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, is executive producing. The series will also include original songs by Anamanaguchi, the band that composed music for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game in 2010.
The teaser trailer for the series, released on Aug. 16, 2023, shows Scott Pilgrim (voiced by Michael Cera) reuniting with Ramona Flowers (voiced by Mary Elizabeth Winstead), his primary love interest from the comics and movie. Scott is also seen jamming out with his bandmates, played by Alison Pill and Mark Webber, and battling Ramona’s evil exes, played by Chris Evans, Jason Schwartzman, Mae Whitman, Satya Bhabha, and Brandon Routh. Scott’s friends (Kieran Culkin, Johnny Simmons, and Aubrey Plaza), exes (Brie Larson and Ellen Wong), and sister (Anna Kendrick) will also return for the series.
O’Malley confirmed on Instagram that the series is not a “word-for-word remake” of the comics, but rather “its own new thing in many ways”. He promised “many fun surprises” for fans of the original material. Wright also revealed that he had suggested an anime adaptation as a possible way to continue the story of Scott Pilgrim over the years, and was thrilled when Netflix approached him with the idea.

The series consists of six volumes published between 2004 and 2010. The live-action movie adaptation, starring Cera and Winstead, was released in 2010 to critical acclaim but modest box office performance. The movie has since gained a cult following and celebrated its 10th anniversary with a re-release in theaters in 2020.
