Tennis legend Serena Williams and her husband Alexis Ohanian have announced the birth of their second child, a baby girl named Adira River Ohanian. The couple shared the news on social media on Tuesday, August 22, with photos and videos of their family of four.
Williams, 41, retired from tennis last year after winning 23 Grand Slam titles. She said one of the reasons for her decision was to expand her family. She gave birth to her first daughter, Olympia, in 2017, while she was still competing.
Ohanian, 38, is the co-founder of Reddit and X, a social media platform formerly known as Twitter. He praised his wife as the “GMOAT” (Greatest mother of all time) and thanked the medical staff who took care of them. He also revealed the meaning behind their daughter’s name, which is inspired by a Bible verse.
“Welcome, Adira River Ohanian,” he wrote. “I’m grateful to report our house is teaming with love: a happy & healthy newborn girl and happy & healthy mama. Feeling grateful. @serenawilliams you’ve now given me another incomparable gift — you’re the GMOAT. Thanks to all the amazing medical staff who took care of my wife & our daughter I’ll never forget the moment I introduced @olympiaohanian to her baby sister.”
He added: “Your peace would have been like a river, your well-being like the waves of the sea.”
Williams also posted a TikTok video of her family welcoming their new addition. She joked that she would be “right back” and then returned with Adira in her arms.
The couple received congratulations from fans and celebrities, including Beyoncé, Naomi Osaka, Venus Williams, and Michelle Obama.
