A shooting at a high school football game in Choctaw, Oklahoma, on Friday night resulted in the death of a 16-year-old boy and injuries to four other people, authorities said.
The incident occurred during the third quarter of the game between Choctaw High School and Del City High School, when an argument between at least two males led to gunfire on the visitor’s side of the stadium, according to the Choctaw Police Department.
The 16-year-old victim, who was not a student at either school, was shot in the groin area and died from his wounds. A 42-year-old man was shot in the chest and underwent surgery. He is in stable condition at a hospital. A young girl was shot in the thigh and was treated and released. Two other girls, believed to be students, suffered broken wrists and a broken leg while trying to escape the chaos.
Police recovered two guns and eight rounds at the scene. They have not identified any suspects or made any arrests, but they are looking for a person of interest based on witness descriptions.
A Del City police officer fired his weapon at the scene, which is being investigated by the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office as an officer-involved shooting. The officer was one of two Del City officers who were present for security purposes, along with five Choctaw officers who are routinely assigned to home games.
The superintendents of both school districts expressed their condolences and said they are cooperating with the police investigation.
