The San Antonio Spurs have made some major moves this offseason, starting with the signing of the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft, Victor Wembanyama. The 7-foot-6 French center is widely regarded as a generational talent with his combination of size, skill and athleticism. The Spurs announced the signing on their official website, but did not disclose the terms of the contract. According to Spotrac, Wembanyama’s cap hit for the 2023-24 season is estimated to be more than $12 million.
The Spurs also re-signed one of their own free agents, guard Tre Jones, to a two-year, $20 million deal, as reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Jones had a career season in 2022-23, averaging 12.9 points, 6.6 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. He was a key contributor to the Spurs’ playoff run, which ended in the second round against the Phoenix Suns.
But the biggest news for the Spurs might be their pursuit of Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard, who reportedly requested a trade last week. Lillard is one of the best players in the league, averaging 28.4 points and 7.5 assists per game last season. He has four years and $176 million left on his contract, which makes him a difficult target to acquire. However, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Lillard has ‘deep respect’ for the Spurs and their coach Gregg Popovich, and would consider them as a potential destination.
The Spurs would have to offer a massive package of young players and draft picks to entice the Blazers to part ways with their franchise player. Some possible trade scenarios include sending Dejounte Murray, Lonnie Walker IV, Keldon Johnson and multiple first-round picks to Portland, or involving a third team like the Cleveland Cavaliers to add more assets.
Whether the Spurs can land Lillard or not, they have already made some significant moves this offseason that could change their fortunes for years to come.
