Tom Holland opens up about his alcohol addiction and sobriety journey

Tom Holland, the star of Spider-Man: No Way Home, has revealed that he was “obsessed” with drinking before he decided to quit alcohol for six months.

In an interview with Jay Shetty on his podcast “On Purpose”, Holland said he realized he had a “problem” with alcohol when he participated in “dry January” in 2022, a trend where people abstain from drinking for a month.

“All I could think about was having a drink. That’s all I could think about,” Holland said. “I was waking up thinking about it. I was checking the clock … And it just really scared me.”

The 27-year-old actor said he decided to extend his alcohol-free period to February, and then to June, his birthday month. He said he was “really struggling” at first, but then he noticed how much better he felt without alcohol.

“I could sleep better. I could handle problems better, things that would go wrong on set, that would normally set me off, I could take in my stride. I had so much better mental clarity. I felt healthier, I felt fitter,” Holland said.

Holland, who is dating Euphoria star Zendaya, said he had tried to quit drinking before, but this time was “different”. He said he changed his mindset and asked himself why he drank in the first place.

“A lot of the time my answer would be to feel more comfortable in a social environment,” Holland said. “Why am I so enslaved by this drink? Why am I so obsessed by the idea of having this drink?”

Holland’s candid confession has been praised by his fans and fellow celebrities, who applauded him for his honesty and courage.
