Two women shot at White Sox game, police investigate source of gunfire

Two women were injured by bullets during Friday night’s game between the Chicago White Sox and the Oakland Athletics at Guaranteed Rate Field, according to Chicago police.

The shooting occurred around the third inning in the outfield seating area, causing confusion and panic among some fans. Security cleared people out of the section, but the game continued despite the active crime scene.

One of the victims, a 24-year-old woman, was grazed in the forehead and taken to Mercy Hospital in good condition. The other victim, a 20-year-old woman, was shot in the thigh and taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition.

It is unclear whether the shots were fired from inside or outside the ballpark. A police spokesperson said on social media that the department would soon provide information on a “shooting incident” at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The White Sox said in a statement that they were not aware at first that a woman injured during the game was shot and that the Chicago Police Department would have stopped play if officers had determined that there was an active shooter inside the stadium.

“The safety and security of our fans is our highest priority,” the statement read. “We will continue to work with local law enforcement to provide any assistance they may need.”

The White Sox lost to the Athletics 12-4, extending their losing streak to four games. They are 50-79 on the season, last in the American League Central division.
