Have you ever forgotten something in your coat pocket and discovered it later? Maybe some loose change, a receipt, or a candy wrapper? Well, one man from England had a much more surprising find when he checked his old coat: a 15-year-old sandwich.
According to AP News, Dave Alexander was cleaning out his closet when he came across a coat he had not worn since 2006. He decided to try it on and felt something in one of the pockets. He reached in and pulled out a plastic bag containing a ham and cheese sandwich that he had bought from a gas station 15 years ago.
“I was absolutely gobsmacked,” Alexander told AP News. “It looked exactly the same as the day I bought it. The bread was not moldy, the cheese was not rotten, and the ham was not slimy.”
Alexander said he remembered buying the sandwich on his way to a soccer match in Manchester in November 2006. He said he put it in his coat pocket and forgot about it when he got to the stadium. He then hung up his coat in his closet and never wore it again until this week.
He said he was amazed that the sandwich had not decomposed or smelled bad after all these years. He wondered if it had something to do with the preservatives in the bread or the cheese. He said he was tempted to taste it, but decided against it.
“I’m not brave enough to try it,” he said. “It might be a bit crunchy.”
Alexander said he posted a photo of his sandwich on social media and got a lot of reactions from his friends and family. Some people were amused, some were disgusted, and some were curious.
“Some people asked me if I was going to sell it on eBay,” he said. “But I don’t think anyone would buy it. It’s not exactly a collector’s item.”
Alexander said he plans to keep his sandwich as a souvenir of his weird discovery. He said he might even frame it and hang it on his wall.
“It’s a good conversation starter,” he said. “It’s not every day you find a 15-year-old sandwich in your coat pocket.”
